The Hostel of God was founded in 1889, and is neither controlled nor supported by the state. There are fifty beds, and under construction is a new wing to take an additional twenty-five patients. The majority of patients, 92 per cent of them suffering from cancer, come from the larger hospitals, with whom the closest touch is maintained.
Income in 1951 was £ 12,000 and expenditure C17,000 whilst the new wing is costing £ 40,000 to build and equip.
