Telefis Éireann-The Irish Channel
Television in the Irish Republic began at the end of 1961 and now reaches the remotest parts of Eire. Close on half of its programming is home-produced, in colour, an ambitious though costly service for a population of around three million. Despite its big neighbour across the channel - probably about half the viewers can receive BBC and ITV-Teleffs Éireann holds its own with its own blend of programming which, above all, is influenced by the countryside and traditions for which Ireland is so famous.
