Taking Liberties

on BBC Two England

Seven films in which
David Jessel takes up the cases of people who find themselves the victims of those institutions they thought would protect them. 4: Suddenly Last Summer.... Jews fleeing Hitler, Russians under Stalin, Iranians opposed to Khomeni, Chinese students.... all have found sanctuary from persecution by escaping to more civilised countries. Britain has a long history of offering political asylum to people who 'have a genuine fear of persecution' in their own country. Suddenly last summer, faced with increased numbers of Kurds escaping oppression in Turkey, British immigration authorities began to bend the rules. Some Kurds were denied the basic right to explain their fears and claim asylum. Many were sent straight back to Turkey.... back to imprisonment and torture.
