Iran. For nearly a decade, Iran and Iraq fought a long and bloody land battle, which resulted in stalemate and in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Since the end of the Gulf War and the subsequent reprisals by Saddam Hussein 's Republican Guard against the Shi'ites and Kurds in Iraq, thousands of refugees have fled into neighbouring Iran.
