A Real Pantomime
Salisbury Playhouse closes this weekend, nearly a third of a million pounds in the red. With radical surgery and a management overhaul, it hopes to re-open in the autumn. It's one of a number of majortheatres in the south forced to take drastic action in the face of financial crisis. As the final production, the pantomime Sleeping Beauty ushers the Playhouse into darkness, Frederic Rostand reports on the backstage drama which is bringing modern theatre to its knees.
