America: 10: The Huddled Masses

on BBC Two England

A personal history of the United States in 13 parts written and narrated by Alistair Cooke

Around the turn of the century millions of immigrants came to the USA from Europe. Many spoke no English. Many, fleeing from persecution, brought only a handful of possessions. This film, shot entirely in New York, describes their experience in coming to the USA and settling into American society.
Alistair Cooke evokes their life on the Lower East Side, their humour, and their attempts to preserve some of the traditions they brought with them from the Old Country.
