Four years ago the village of Llanaelhaearn (population 250), in North Wales, was dying. The slate quarries which had employed many villagers had closed, and young people were moving away to find work.

Carl Clowes, the new village doctor, arrived as the battle to save the village school began. Since then he has been the moving spirit behind a village co-operative society which has achieved some surprising results.
