Six years ago, Jacques Benveniste, a highly respected immunologist and medical researcher in Paris, claimed to have stumbled upon a remarkable system of cell communication.
This first of six programmes about contemporary scientists whose work has challenged accepted wisdom tells the story of Benveniste's findings, which if correct would have contradicted many of the laws of biochemistry. His theories were examined and investigators declared his "memory of water" discovery to be an "experimental error". Colleagues disowned him and he was even accused of disgracing his country.
