'People think writing is a form of escapism. It's the other way round - writing is something that you try to escape from'
To many people Richard Hughes is one of the best storytellers writing in English today. In 50 years he has published four novels. His first, A High Wind in Jamaica, was a bestseller, later a film. He writes slowly and laboriously (20 to 40 drafts of his novel The Fox in the Attic, which began his major work The Human Predicament). Although he has travelled widely he has done most of his writing in Wales, and he now lives in a remote corner of Snowdonia. He talks to ALASDAIR CLAYRE.
