The World About Us

on BBC Two England

The last of three programmes on the marine world. Feast or Famine
Introduced by Tony Soper
A modern purse net could easily engulf St Paul 's Cathedral. It can take hundreds of tons of fish in one swallow and is just one of the high technology tools used by fishermen hunting for the dwindling resources around our coasts. The vast shoals of herring have all but gone from the North Sea; the new bonanza is the silver mackerel to the west of Britain. But are they doomed to follow the herring's decline?
