Bolwieser, station-master in a small town near Munich, has a high opinion of himself based largely on his marriage to the beautiful daughter of a brewer. Everyone else in the town knows that his Hanni has been having an affair with the butcher for years.
Then Boiwieser hears some gossip and goes to court to defend his wife's reputation - and starts the ruin of his own.
