New England in the 19th century. Olive Chancellor, a shy but forceful suffragette, takes on the education of Verena Tarrant, a pretty, naive young woman with a gift for oratory. But her influence over Verena is threatened by Basil Ransome , a handsome, but impecunious, lawyer. Not only is he in love with Verena, he is less than sympathetic to the feminist cause.
