Featuring one of the world's greatest vocal groups The Four Freshmen.
The Four Freshmen in Something Special at 8.5 on BBC-2
That old show-business dream of having an influential and sympathetic person in the audience came true for The Four Freshmen one night in 1950 at a small club called The Esquire Lounge in Dayton, Ohio. Stan Kenton - then at the height of his fame with his Innovations in Modern Music orchestra - was relaxing after a concert and was so impressed with the Freshmen that next morning he rang Capitol Records in Hollywood and recommended them for a contract.
From then on it was a steady and rapid climb to the top of the vocal-group ladder for the quartet who began as The Toppers in 1948 and changed their name (to get more appeal with college customers) upon turning professional.
