This play could be called a thriller, but it is a thriller plus. In a condemned building a man who may be mad plays chess with a man who may, as he claims, be a retired railwayman. As they play it emerges that they are involved in another game in which their lives are pawns. Compassion, disillusionment, fear, and humour create high tension, and the play rises to a climax which a preview notice said 'hurts.'
