The Home Front

on BBC Two England

A series of six films with Patrick Nuttgens
2: What about the Workers?Tonight's film looks at the origins of mass housing in the slums of the Industrial Revolution and the first attempts to provide decent housing for the working man in Scotland, in Yorkshire and on Merseyside. Also, how government became involved after the First World War and why.
Patrick Nuttgens explores these questions with the help of rare archive film and first-hand accounts of life in the early part of this century: under the wing of philanthropic employers like the Rowntree family, or in the early, ambitious council schemes like the Quarry Hill flats in Leeds.
