David Lang, having remained in the Royal Air Force after the war, returns to London after a considerable absence; and, in the hope of contacting his wartime bomber crew, he goes to The Bells, where they always foregathered. He manages to contact them all but one-Stefan Zalek-who seems to have disappeared. Stefan's sister, Lise -a cabaret singer — enlists David's help in the ' Search for Zalek.'
