Midweek Cinema: The Liberation of L. B. Jones

on BBC Two England

A William Wyler Season starring Lee J. Cobb, Anthony Zerbe, Roscoe Lee Browne, Lee Majors, Barbara Hershey, Yaphet Kotto, Chill Wills, Lola Falana

William Wyler's last film, to date, is a powerful, uncompromising study of racism in a small Tennessee town. Lawyer Oman Hedgepath is persuaded by his nephew to take on a black client - an affluent undertaker seeking a divorce from his wife who is having an affair with a white policeman. Fears that court proceedings could bring damaging evidence out into the open are enough to make the whites close ranks - and they take sinister and violent action.
