If You Love Him, Let Him Go On a Cheshire hillside, retired lecturer
Alan [text removed] has a heart-to-heart with his son Richard. The family is facing an agonising decision, should they let Richard leave home? Richard is 22, a cheerful young man with the gift of livening up any company he's in. He's one of the thousands of mentally handicapped adults living with their families, many more than in institutions. And all their parents, like Alan and Mary [text removed] , face the same dilemma: what happens when we're gone?
Mandy is also 22, but she can't walk or talk. Her parents, Norman and May
[text removed], have always cared for her. She has never spent a night away from them. Now they must think about the unthinkable.
Richard and Mandy have been offered different lives - places in a residential home. What will the families decide? Photography JILL PEIRSON Sound RICHARD MANTON Film editor ALAN LYGO
