Discovering Beethoven

on BBC Two England

The ebullient American conductor Michael Tilson
Thomas presents this musical journey back to the Vienna of 1800 where the young Beethoven is writing a new symphony on a heroic theme. With the help of the London Symphony Orchestra and a grand piano, Tilson Thomas demonstrates how the Eroica Symphony became a sort of musical journal for its composer, and manages to answer that eternal question: what does music mean?
Followed by a performance of the Eroica Symphony. Director John Michael Phillips
