Coffee, sugar, tea and cotton estates are completely run down. The business community has been decimated, factories are closed, banks have been looted and the country's coffers are empty. The government is facing up to the massive task of rebuilding an economy bled dry by eight years of a dictatorship.
But what sort of economic system will President Lule want to build as Washington, Peking and Moscow vie for political influence?
