Ernst Lubitsch, the celebrated director of comedies, chose Warsaw in 1939 as the setting for this witty and exciting film. Against the grim background of Poland under the Nazis, Lubitsch tells the light-hearted story of a troupe of actors for whom 'To be or not to be' was often very much the question.
