* BUSONI'S 'FAUST'

on BBC Radio 3

by ERICH HELLER
Professor of Humanities at
Northwestern University. Illinois
Busoni's libretto differs significantly from the Faust story as developed by Goethe. In this it is like some other more recent versions: it takes as its model the original German puppet play and has Faust asking of Mephistopheles the gift of genius, not simply that of knowledge and power.
Recorded in Illinois
' Doktor Faust ': Monday, 8.0 p.m.
