'I was quite taken aback when I found this diary in a heap of some old papers of mine. All compiled in a wee black book, and rather neatly written out. All about my experiences as a Lancaster bomb-aimer, between 29 May and 13Ã August 1944 - aged about 22 at the time. On reading it I could hardly believe I was involved in all these air-raids over France and the Third Reich. I was one of the lucky ones who survived - many of my pals did not.'
