20th-century Treasure Trove

on BBC Two England

The Lively Arts
The National Film Archive has salvaged a vast selection of almost everything recorded by the movie i camera. This film is based on a script by ROBERT VAS , and shows extracts from the Archive's treasures that range from Walt Disney to Fritz Lang , L'Age d'Or to Brief Encounter and back to the first films ever shot in 1895. It reflects not only the glamour and excitement of the entertainment industry, but the memory of how we lived - all rescued from oblivion.
It also shows the Archive at work: ! the detective work on mysterious old film. the gigantic task of cataloguing the hoard, and because film is ephemeral stuff, the constant battle against degeneration and decay. Narrator COLIN DOUGLAS
