The Edge of the Sixties: 4: VE Plus Ten

on BBC Television

View in Radio Times

The programme is introduced by Lord Boothby, K.B.E. who also adds a postscript.
The end of the fighting in Europe - VE day - and the ten crowded years that followed: the decade in which Britain tried to resume the ways of peace - to end rationing, and to rediscover such things as real cream, coupon-free petrol, and day-trips across the Channel. It was the decade of the four-minute mile, of jet-propulsion, and the start of the new Elizabethan era. But it was also a time in which the Iron Curtain descended over Europe-the decade of the Berlin airlift, the rise of Communist China, the war in Korea, and the start of the nuclear age.
