The setting Is a dug-out In the British trenches before St. Quentin in March 1918. The Germans are entrenched a mere hundred yards away. and Captain Stanhope, the company commander, knows that an offensive is imminent. With the arrival of Raleigh, a young as yet unblooded' Subaltern from Stanhope's old school, the scene is set for a conflict between men in adversity and under great personal stress .. ,
