La Traviata

on BBC Two England

This performance of one of Verdi's most popular operas was recorded in the magnificent setting of La Fenice opera house in Venice, where the work was premiered in 1853. Edita Gruberova , one of the world's leading coloratura sopranos, takes the title role of the doomed courtesan Violetta
Valery, and her lover Alfredo is sung by American tenor
Neil Shicoff. The opera is staged and designed by Pier Luigi Pizzi and is conducted by Carlo Rizzi.
Set against the background of Parisian high society in the 1840s, the opera tells the story of a passionate but tragic love affair. Violetta returns the affections of her wealthy young lover, but does not tell him she is dying of consumption. When the young man's father persuades her to give him up for the sake of his family, she sadly agrees. But Alfredo misinterprets the reasons for his rejection and by the time he learns the truth it is too late.
