'A MOCK BEAR HUNT'

on National Programme Daventry

View in Radio Times

Basil Collier
When Basil Collier was staying in the Pyrenees last year he witnessed a curious piece of ceremonial, when the villagers dressed up and went in pursuit of a mock bear. The bear was really one of themselves disguised. Nobody knows the origin of this centuries-old ceremony, but it is probably a mixture of Christian and pagan ceremonials, and has to do with good hunting and the fertility of crops.
