The big mammals are the superstars of Africa. But alongside these large, charismatic beasts is a cast of smaller creatures usually overlooked. For instance, a giraffe might play host to 50,000 ticks. These and others like them are much more important in maintaining the balance of nature than the big game. Working in South Africa's Kruger National Park, award-winning film-makers David and Carol Hughes focus on the fascinating "creepy crawlies" whose lives are often far more astonishing than those of the gazelles and their predators.
They enter the catacombs of a termite mound, witness the relentless quest of a deadly fly that needs wasps to help her breed, record the fierce competition for dung among Africa's most important beetles, and shudder at the mini-monsters that hunt after dark.
