In 1933, the year the British Film Institute was founded, Charles Laughton collected an Oscar for his performance in The Private Life of Henry the Eighth. In 1983 Ben Kingsley received the same accolade for his part in another international success, Gandhi. With clips from films old and new, acclaimed and popular, Britain at the Pictures presents a celebration of over 50 years of the achievements of British film makers and the experiences of British filmgoers.
