Horizon

on BBC Two England

The Pathway from Madness
Schizophrenia-classical madness-is one of the major diseases of mankind. Nine million people around the world suffer from it. RICHARD CAREY has been in hospital twice with schizophrenic episodes. Through his experiences Horizon looks at what it's like to become mad, and what the problems are of returning to the community afterwards.
Schizophrenia is not multiple personality-like Jekyll and Hyde. Rather the mind fragments, breaks apart so nothing makes sense.
But what causes it? Is it inherited? Can it be prevented and if so how? After years of controversy and confusion science is beginning to answer some of these questions. The knowledge now exists to keep thousands of schizophrenics like Richard Carey sane - if the necessary care is provided.
