The Dead Sea Lives
What does the Dead Sea mean to you? Somewhere you float like a cork? The lowest place on Earth? Site of Sodom and Gomorrah? The Dead Sea has a weird fascination beyond geography and chemistry. It was only in the Middle Ages that the Dead Sea ' died Before that it was a sea of wealth. Today, the Dead Sea is coming alive again. It is prized by its joint owners-Israel and Jordan-but the border that runs right down the middle holds them apart. Horizon travelled to both sides of the border to find the Dead Sea's prizes - algae that form the secret ingredient of lipstick or lemonade; a solar pond to solve Israel's energy crisis; the world's unlikeliest tourist beaches; chemicals galore from modern Sodom. For both Israel and Jordan the Dead Sea is a natural treasure house. Could it even become a focus for peace?
