Great American Picture Show: The Godfather

on BBC Two England

The famous feature film starring Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, Al Pacino as Michael Corleone, James Caan as Sonny Corleone, Richard Castellano as Clemenza, Robert Duvall as Tom Hagen, Sterling Hayden as McCluskey, John Marley as Jack Woltz, Richard Conte as Barzini, Diane Keaton as Kay Adams, Al Lettieri as Sollozzo

Long Island, just outside New York City, 1945: Don Corleone's daughter, Connie, is to be married. For the 'Godfather' it is a time of celebration - the war is over and America is up for grabs. Guests come from far and wide, pledging gifts to the bride and groom - while asking favours which the Godfather is bound to grant on this special day. Thus begins one of Hollywood's classic movies, creating a vivid portrait of Italian-American 'family' life while examining the nature of power at its most evil and corrupt.
