The disorder disrupts the lives of one person in four, but does it also bring creative benefits? Behind its black cloud lies a chemical imbalance that can be reduced by drugs, ECT or even conversation. Faulty genes transmit the disease from one generation to the next - a recent discovery that offers new hope.
