Silver Spoon

on BBC Two England

Some babies really are born with a silver spoon. In keeping with an ancient royal custom, each child born on Coronation Day in 1953 was presented with one. This week these Coronation babies, the "new Elizabethans", celebrate their 40th birthday. Drawing on BBC interviews shot with some of them in 1977, this film explores how adult life has compared with their contrasting early expectations, and how marriage, careers and the events of the 1980s have changed their lives.
