Midweek Cinema: Interlude

on BBC Two England

continues the season of films by DOUGLAS SIRK starring
June Allyson
Rossano Brazzi
When librarian Helen Banning goes to work in Munich, she is not prepared for the delights of Europe or an unexpected love affair with an internationally famous conductor, Tonio Fischer. Unfortunately, the musician is married and his wife Reni is mentally ill ... Director Douglas Sirk turns this conventional love story into a bleakly-moving portrait of a tortured marriage and engages our sympathy as much for the neurotic wife as for the lovers. The film was shot largely on location and the city of Munich forms an important aspect of the film.
