Alfred Brendel: Man and Mask

on BBC Two England

Classical musician Alfred Brendel is an artist whose main work, interpreting scores written for the piano, is illuminated by other aspects of his life, including his love of painting, literature, theatre and philosophy. For the past two years a film crew has been allowed to follow him and the result is combined with archive footage in this portrait of the pianist as he approaches his 70th birthday. Above all the film focuses on the creative process as Brendel works with conductor Simon Rattle, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and on Schubert's Winterreise with singer Matthias Goeme.
