The outcome of the great battle between the Archdeacon and the Bishop's chaplain is still in doubt. It is Mr. Harding, not Mr. Slope, who has been offered the Deanery. Mr. Harding. feeling himself too old, is unwilling to accept; but the Archdeacon, fearing that a refusal may deprive him of his triumph over the hated Slope, has induced Mr. Harding to ask the Prime Minister for two days' grace before coming to a final decision.
