India's Satellite TV
' Pictures from heaven ' is how the inhabitants of 2,400 Indian villages describe the new arrival amongst them: television. Most of the villagers have never seen a film and now every evening they gather around a community set to watch a programme of information and entertainment carefully planned to bring them into line with the 20th century. In a unique experiment India is using a satellite to beam down instructional and educational television to some of the most backward parts of the country. The scheme, which began last
August and will continue for a year, has attracted a lot of attention as well as some criticism. Frank Gillard presents a report on its progress.
