' At a Manorial Court'
RHODA POWER
Centuries ago the lord of the manor was a far more important man than he is today. At certain times in the year, for instance, the lord or his steward held a special court of justice where delinquents were tried and sentenced. The manorial court had other uses as well : disputes were settled there, and if a man wanted to take over a piece of land inherited from a relation, he had to appear before the court, swear to be loyal to the lord of the manor, and pay a fine. Listeners will hear all about these courts, and may overhear what took place at one of them.
