Time Out

on BBC Two England

Ludovic Kennedy introduces this weekly programme on the expanding world of leisure.

Only Three Came Back
Written by Adam Clapham.
One hundred years ago the Matterhorn was climbed for the first time. On the descent, four of the seven climbers plunged to their death 4,000 feet below when the rope broke. Dick Graham examines the mystery which surrounded the accident and talks to the relatives of the only British survivor-one of the greatest of the Victorian mountaineers.

Gala Day
Holidays today are so much a part of life that we take them for granted. But for the miners of Durham 'Gala Day' is a living reminder of the time when holidays had to be fought for.It is a day for washing the coal dust from their throats with as much beer as they can hold, for reviving old memories and reliving old battles. For the young, who have no memories and for whom politics are often a bore, this is a day for making whoopee.
