Forty Minutes

on BBC Two England

... of documentary English Lesson
A year ago nine Polish seamen slipped ashore as their fishing vessel lay off Port Stanley, and sought political asylum with the British authorities in the Falkland Islands. But within a few weeks, the Falklands became the Malvinas, and the Poles had exchanged one military dictatorship for another. Despite beatings and arrests, they survived the occupation, and when the Task Force landed Major Chris Keeble of 2 Para was glad to take them on to hump and dump ammunition. They were sent back to England, and now they reside in London-but in a limbo. They cannot work in their chosen trade, yet so far the authorities have refused them travel documents. They wait in the affluent West in cheap digs, existing on the fringe of London's Polish community, rootless and jobless, and wondering at the vagaries of an extraordinary year and the uncertainty of tomorrow.
