In the name of progress and a better urban environment, cities all over Great Britain are being transformed by concrete and glass into piazzas and precincts, motorways and multi-storey car parks. But is it progress for the people who live in the cities? Are the new houses and flats better; the new public transport services quicker; the new shopping areas more useful?
After 20 years of debate, the City of Cardiff is now facing all these problems. It is about to start the largest redevelopment scheme in the UK in partnership with one of the largest property companies who have already got a major interest in other towns - among them Plymouth, Liverpool, Newcastle and Croydon. Will the Cardiff scheme really benefit its people and how will it affect the other problems of the city?
