Rocking the Navy's Boat
The Government is about to take a decision which could bring into the open a simmering war inside the Ministry of Defence. It's about the way our warships are designed; the navy say their methods are best but they are being challenged-with ministerial encouragement-by a small private design team who say they can offer cheaper, better-armed ships.
Fred Emery reports on this argument between ministers and admirals, civil servants and scientists and on the unusual bitterness it has produced inside the navy.
