Northern Florida in the sixties: "Bird" Jackson is a precocious nine-year-old, struggling to cope with the aftermath of her father's suicide. Bird's mother, Glory Marie, is haunted by her tragic past and trapped in an alcoholic present. Bird finds refuge in a secret friendship with Miss Zora, a wise, tender woman with a mysterious past.
