Of all the murder-chapters in Dickens, this which concludes ' the enterprise of Mr. Jonas and his friend ' is perhaps the most memorable. Memorable particularly for its restraint. With all his openhanded carelessness of technique, Dickens knew when to leave something to the reader's imagination.
