* The Two Poetries

on BBC Radio 3

ANTHONY THWAITE examines a situation in which, he says, ' I can see a future coming when there will be two poetries: one the preserve of school-teachers and dons who go on talking in a lecture-room vacuum about form and standards and interpretation, and who manipulate people through exams; and the other a blurred area dominated solely by sensation and fashion and having the popular and fluent transience of the record charts.'
