Connellan's Camels
Narrated by Duncan Carse
Thirty-eight years ago, Eddie J. Connellan piloted a single-engined aeroplane out of Alice Springs on the first regular mail flight over Australia's remote Northern Territory. Connellan's wings replaced the camel trains which up until 1939 had been the only reliable way of traversing the dry red centre of Australia.
The 100,000 people scattered over half a million square miles owe their existence to the remarkable immigrant camel and to Eddie Connellan who saw a developing Northern Territory, peopled by men and women not unduly penalised by isolation and the inconveniences of living in the Outback.
