A grand tour of some of the outstanding European and American zoos with Anthony Smith
In a corner of Regent's Park, covering thirty-six acres, is one of the oldest and most respected zoos. As a living library of the animal kingdom its comprehensive collection of species has commanded worldwide public and scientific acclaim.
As well as its animals, the Zoological Society of London has to maintain research establishments and an important zoological reference library, and this has to be done against a background of limited funds, restricted space, the time-consuming process of democratic planning and, like so many of the older European zoos, the complexities of a major rebuilding programme. How does London keep pace with rapidly changing ideas and techniques in order to maintain its place in the vanguard of great world zoos?
