Industrial plant is generally thought to be functional rather than beautiful. Yet in the 1830s the artist Thomas Hair travelled the coalfields of Northumberland and Durham to produce a volume of magnificent sketches of the coalmines and mining landscapes. It is this quality of monumental scenic grandeur which typifies the industrial past of the North East.
